But I must point out that there is an equal chance that you would have a daughter. [...] Why would it be any different from what you would teach a son?

All the Star Treks were far, far ahead of their time. Whoopie Goldberg admitted that she was inspired by TOS Nichelle Nichols, TNG had crewmen wearing dresses, Voyager had the Woman-Captain that had her own voice and was more than just a man-as-woman... and there are the many, many small story arcs that underline how being different is a feature, not a bug.

There is now officially a version of “Never Gonna Give You Up” in Klingon.

Knock yourselves out, Trekkies.

My fucking God.

Dr. Mae Jemison, MD, the first black woman in space and first actual astronaut to appear on a Star Trek show, one of the very few people on this planet of whom two pictures can be posted depicting them doing their job on a spaceship with entirely different contexts.

Holy shit this is a serious contender for the best post I’ve ever seen on tumblr.

"Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy. Leonard was a lifelong lover of the arts and humanities, a supporter of the sciences, generous with his talent and his time. And of course, Leonard was Spock. Cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed, the center of Star Trek’s optimistic, inclusive vision of humanity’s future. I loved Spock. In 2007, I had the chance to meet Leonard in person. It was only logical to greet him with the Vulcan salute, the universal sign for ‘Live long and prosper.’ And after 83 years on this planet—and on his visits to many others – it’s clear Leonard Nimoy did just that. Michelle and I join his family, friends, and countless fans who miss him so dearly today." —President Obama

Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most… human.
